I went to a memorial gathering for a dear friend yesterday evening. He passed away last month after a long and brave fight against cancer. When I learned of his death last month, I recognized the pain of too many “I will reach out soon” thoughts. I missed one last opportunity to tell someone special to me that I loved him dearly. We can push what matters off until it is too late. We can be distracted by the details or weight of life, or paralyzed by the voices that distract us from action. At the gathering, I spoke with dear friends about the need, now more than ever, to motivate change through vulnerability, truth and connection. Now is not the time to hold back what we have to say because we fear someone might judge the validity of our voice. Now is not the time to allow our own naysaying voices to hold us back. Now is the time to ask ourselves what we believe in most and how we can stand up for it. Then we take action. This is the essence of Last Cut.
